Iodine is an important mineral that helps your body make thyroid hormones . Your thyroid needs iodine to produce the hormones that control your metabolism and many other important functions in your body.

If you don't get enough iodine or your body can't use it properly, you may not be able to make enough of these hormones for good health. This condition is called hypothyroidism .
